However, to tell you the truth, decades of illegal immigration into states like California and Texas have fairly well driven out those people who would otherwise take those jobs. The jobs are only available at wages that do not pay what Americans consider to be a living wage. If the illegal immigrants are legalized, however, they will no longer work for those wages. lem-what makes you think they get $5 an hour?? My husband is in the construction business. He pays the laborers,mostly illegals, with no experience $9 an hour to start and then if they show potential and work hard they get a raise after a few months. And then if they have experience they can make up to $20 an hour. And they are not paid under the table they usually have made up socials and they are taxed and govt keeps that money as well as the money the illegal would have gotten as a refund if he filed his taxes. Some work with a tax id number which is legal and they can file taxes with it. It true illegals go out and seek the jobs that is one reason you see them out in front of places like home depot etc looking for contruction jobs. and even going to contruction sites, they dont wait at home for a job to fall in their lap.
